Do you agree that there still exist many taboos in the world today?
What is considered taboo can vary greatly between regions and cultures. It is important to be aware of, and respectful of these different cultural and social norms.
Having evolved from a rich and ancient culture, the Peranakans, understandably, hold onto many taboos or 'pantang larang'.
Let's hear from Ah Cheng who has learnt and absorbed them well from her 'Tau Ka Leong', Engkim MeiLing, after having served the family for many decades.
The list ranges from their household rules during the month of the Hungry Ghost Festival, to present suggestions for one's mother-in-law's birthday (to gain favour of course!) and why/when you should sneak in through the back door (for real ... nothing political).
