The Baba patois is the language spoken by the Peranakan community from Melaka, Singapore and Penang in varying degrees. The older generation are more comfortable with the language but many of the younger generation now speak English with ease and whilst some will understand it, most don’t practice speaking it!
Listen to Baba Lee Yuen Thien and Nyonya Phoenix Emily’s take on the Baba patois on this BFM podcast on Friday, 11 September 2020!
They both talk as though they were very old... actually they are a couple of young-ish peranakans who live and practice the Peranakan culture and heritage taught by their elders!
