Dondang Sayang is a traditional art form still practiced by the Peranakan communities, albeit getting less regular with fewer practitioners as the older generation retire. The dondang saying usually combines elements of music (violins, gongs and tambourines or the tambour), songs and chants, and features beautiful melodious strains of poetry. Also known as love ballads, the songs are used by communities to convey feelings of love and give advice on special topics such as love and kindness. So if you’re feeling some love coming on, do join our guests, Baba Peter Yeoh and Baba Cedric Tan on this month’s Virtually Yours – by PPBNKLS on Saturday 5th June @4pm on the topic of The Melody of Love: Dondang Sayang. Join us on Zoom by clicking here. Baba Peter and Baba Cedric will be telling us stories of dulukala and how the dondang sayang has been adapted from being a Malay art form into a Peranakan staple especially at happy events such as weddings, birthdays, annual dinners. If you have been good and staying at home following SOPs, you may even be treated with some dondang sayang action!
