The early nyonya kebaya is believed to have developed from the Malay baju panjang (long dress), which comprises a knee-length tunic worn over a batik sarong (printed tube skirt) usually of sombre colours. Instead of a long tunic, the nyonya kebaya is a tighter-fitting sheer embroidered blouse that is traditionally paired with a batik sarong blouse that now displays a wide array of colours befitting many different occasions.
Do you have a little corner in your wardrobe housing your grandmother's sarongs and kebayas? You don't fit into them, or you do but don't know what to do with them?
Come and join our special guests, John Ang and Sean Koay in their sharing of how they started collecting vintage textiles, what they do with them, and what makes a beautiful ensemble of Sarong Kebaya to their eyes.
John is a Southeast Asian textile collector & researcher and Sean, a young culture enthusiast & vintage kebaya collector will be joined by none other than our Peranakan culture guru, Baba Cedric Tan as the moderator for this session.
