RTM2 What Say You
Winter Solstice
On the 13 December 2020 (live shoot) and 20 December 2020 (TV broadcast), Baba Cedric Tan and Nyonya Emily Lim represented PPBNKLS in RTM2's What Say You segment to explain the traditions of winter solstice, the Peranakan way!
Have you ever had your grandmother, or your mother or aunties tell you that "Tang Chek" is a very important day in the Chinese calendar? In fact, Tang Chek or the Winter Solstice Festival which falls on December 21 this year, marks the shortest day of the year and is celebrated in many different ways in different parts of the world.
For the Peranakans, Tang Chek is synonymous to Kueh Ee or Tang Yuen, glutinuos rice balls filled with sugary sweetness, served in a sugary syrup. Something I was also told that I must have at least one Kueh Ee during the festival or I would not grow another year older! As children, we probably rushed to have as many Kueh Ee's as we can in order to grow up faster. But as we grow older, does the myth still hold true - that if we DON'T eat any Kueh Ees, we wont grow older each year?? One can only hope!
Do join us in watching the What Say You segment on RTM2 on Sunday 20 December at 4 - 5pm to find out more about this festival that Peranakan families still make a big fuss about till this day!
